CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson College Director of Athletics Joel Quattrone has announced the hiring of Richard Glanfield as the new head coach of both the Men’s and Women’s Squash programs.
“We are very fortunate to bring Coach Glanfield to Dickinson as our next squash coach,” said Quattrone. He went on to add “Richard has made his presence known internationally as an outstanding coach and teacher of this great game.”
Glanfield became well acquainted with the Dickinson campus during the 2021-22 season serving as an interim coach while the search was being conducted. When asked about what made coming to Carlisle full-time Glanfield summed it up quite succinctly. “It was the players,” he said, “Initially I was only asked to help throughout the season, but once I spent time with the athletes and had a chance to get to know them I knew that this was the spot for me.”
Quattrone echoed Glanfield’s thoughts about the players by saying “it was clear to see how much our student-athletes enjoyed working with Richard this season and the excitement was evident in their faces when the announcement was made that he would be taking over full-time.”
Glanfield, a native of Shropshire, England began his professional career in 1983 and has been coaching all around the world. He became the world’s youngest international squash coach when he took charge of the Cyprus team at the 1986 European Championships at the age of just 21. Since that point, he has coached within the nations of The Netherlands, Spain, and France, while serving as the national team coach of Malaysia, Peru, and most recently Trinidad and Tobago. One of his most impressive accomplishments came during his time in Malaysia where he coached the top women’s player in the world Nicol David for nine years from age eleven to twenty. He arrived in the United States in 2012 and spent four years each in Las Vegas and Santa Barbara, before taking over as the Director of Squash at both The Baldwin School and Baldwin Squash Academy in Pennsylvania.
“I have had a very fortunate career over the last 35 years as a squash coach and have been lucky to be involved at every level of this great game,” Glanfield said. He went on to say “college squash coaching is now seen as the very pinnacle of the squash coaching structure, and I am both proud as well as honored that my path has brought me to Dickinson.”
When asked about what has him excited to be able to craft an entire program his way Glanfield said “it is always exciting when afforded the opportunity to set up a program.” “My goal is to provide a structured and balanced path to success both on and off the court for our student-athletes.”
“All of Red Devil Nation looks forward to welcoming Coach Glanfield to the Dickinson family,” said Quattrone. Glanfield will begin his career officially with Dickinson on April 1…….
