The quarter finalists of the Sturbridge Capital Motor City Open were decided last night at the Birmingham Athletic Club in Detroit, with all top eight seeds confidently booking their places.
Soon-to-be World No.1 Paul Coll got his campaign underway with a straightforward 30 minute victory over wildcard Cesar Salazar from Mexico. Coll, who will go to the top of the men’s rankings in March, will now play Malaysian No.1 Eain Yow Ng in the quarter finals after he defeated Spain’s Borja Golan 3-0, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 in 41 minutes to progress.
Defending Champion Diego Elias also got off to a winning start, as it took him almost an hour to defeat England’s Nathan Lake. Two tough first games saw the score level at 1-1 but the World No.6 was able to use his quality to close the match out 3-1. Dangerous Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad awaits Elias in the quarter finals after ‘The Baby faced Assassin’ managed to beat fiery Englishman George Parker in a tough 3-1 in 56 minutes.
‘Hammer of Thor’ Omar Mosaad had to come from two games down in his first round match against Ivan Yuen and looked to be repeating his success as he clawed the third game back from Fares Dessouky but it was not to be for Mosaad as Dessouky showed his class to take the fourth game 11-3. Dessouky has set up a quarter final match with 2018 Motor City Open winner Marwan ElShorbagy, who beat Adrain Waller from England 3-0 in 35 minutes.
The last matches of the day also saw two Egyptian winners as recent Houston Open runner-up Mazen Hesham and former World Champion Tarek Momen sealed their quarter final places. Hesham dropped the first game to talented Swiss Nicolas Mueller before coming back strongly to win 3-1. Momen took on Frenchman Sebastien Bonmalais, who picked up a good win in his first round match against England’s Patrick Rooney, but there was no such joy for the Frenchman in round two as Momen was too strong and won 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 in 34 minutes.
Quarter final action will start from 18:00 (GMT-5) from Detroit.
The Motor City Open will be broadcast live on Youtube.
